A clamp metre is a clothespin-shaped device that can be clamped around a live wire to measure the current flowing through it. Clamp metres use the magnetic field created by current flowing in a wire as a measurement principle to determine the current value. Unlike multimeters, this design has the benefit of being able to measure current without cutting the circuit being measured. There are two types of clamp metres in general:
