While both tachometers and stroboscopes are tools used in many domains to measure and track rotational speed, they function differently and have distinct uses. An instrument called a tachometer is used to calculate an object's rotational speed, usually expressed in revolutions per minute (RPM). It functions by sensing variations in speed, typically with the aid of sensors such as contact-based mechanisms, magnetic sensors, or optical encoders. A stroboscope is a device that employs light bursts to visually stop the motion of a spinning or reciprocating object. It is sometimes referred to as a strobe light or strobe tachometer.
