Faces of soft-faced or deadblow mallets are constructed of materials like nylon, natural rubber, or tightly wound rawhide, as well as soft metals like copper, aluminium, brass, or lead. The purpose of material selection is to avoid damaging the striking surface. Because heads and individual faces distort, wear out, or break over time, they are sometimes replaceable. The weight of the head and the hardness of the striking face are used to evaluate the hammers. Solid brass heads are utilised in situations that require less vibration.
