A rotameter is a type of flow meter used to determine a gas or fluid's volumetric flow rate. It is made up of a tapering tube that has an interior float that moves.
Variable area flowmeters, gravity flowmeters, and mechanical flowmeters are some names for them. Because the flow rate is read from the float position in the tapered tube—which is governed by the balance of forces from gravity underneath the float—the gravity phrase refers to the requirement that the rotameter be positioned vertically.
With the scale graduations on the tube, the metering tube begins at the bottom with the smaller taper and extends to the top.
