Bringing an object as close to the eye as possible when wishing to examine an object's details is instinctive. The angle that an object subtends at the eye increases with proximity to the eye, making it appear larger. However, if an item is too near, the eye will no longer be able to generate a distinct image. The creation of a "virtual image" that may be comfortably observed is made possible by the use of a magnifying lens between the observer and the object. The magnifier should be positioned exactly in front of the eye to provide the clearest image possible.
